Kyonan Town in Awa District, Chiba Prefecture, is a fishing port town. Its coastline is characterized by its undulating terrain, and a large amount of seafood is landed here. Characters associated with the town include "Mikaeri-chan," "Yoritomo-kun," and "Shinbei-kun." "Mikaeri-chan" is derived from the "Mikaeri-bijin" (beautiful woman with a beautiful face) often featured in school history classes. "Yoritomo-kun" is named after Minamoto no Yoritomo, who landed in the town when he fled after losing a battle. Shinbei-kun is modeled after a legendary whaler, as the town has a 200-year history of whaling. A popular tourist spot is Japan's largest Buddha statue, attracting many visitors every year.
