About Takko Town
Takko Town, Sannohe County, is located in the southernmost part of Aomori Prefecture, on the border between Iwate and Akita prefectures. Much of the town is mountainous, formed by the Hakkoda mountain range. Among these mountains are Daikokumori and Raibachimori, and rivers such as the Kumahara River and Sugikura River flow through the town. The town's name is said to come from the Ainu word "Pukopu," meaning "small hill." The cool climate is typical of mountainous areas, with large temperature differences. As a result of the long history of permanent settlements, many Jomon period ruins have been excavated. The town's primary industry is agriculture, primarily field crops. Garlic production is the highest in Japan, and the town is known as "garlic town." Livestock farming, including Takko beef, is also thriving.
