Noshiro City was newly established in March 2006. It is surrounded by numerous mountain ranges, centered around the Shirakami-Sanchi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lumber industry is thriving in the area, thanks to its lush natural environment. Popular local dishes include grilled sweetfish caught in the Yoneshiro River and wild vegetable rice made with plenty of wild vegetables from the Shirakami-Sanchi. A variety of natural scenery can be seen throughout the year. The Wind Pine Grove and the sunsets reflected on the Sea of Japan are particularly recommended. Noshiro Technical High School, famous for its basketball team, is also home to the city. City events, such as the Onagori Festival, Noshiro Port Festival, and the Noshiro Port Festival Fireworks Display, entertain both residents and tourists.
