Kitaakita City is located in the northern part of Akita. A distinctive feature of the region is that more than half of the city is covered by forests. As a result, agriculture and forestry are thriving in the city. Currently, the city is experiencing depopulation and the number of people working in agriculture is decreasing. The city is home to the Odaiko Museum, which houses a Tsuzuriko Odaiko drum, certified by the Guinness Book of World Records, as well as many other drums that are considered rare worldwide. It is famous nationwide as a taiko museum. Kitaakita City has also been designated as an Ani Matagi Special Zone. The city has a close relationship with bears, as it is home to a bear ranch. Heavy snow falls in the winter, making it one of the heaviest snowfall areas in the country.
