About Shitara Town
Shitara Town in Kitashitara District is a town rich in nature, with 90% of the town covered in forests, mountains such as Mt. Danto and Mt. Osuzu, and rivers such as the Toyokawa River and the Nagura River. Taking advantage of this bountiful natural environment, rice, tomatoes, cabbage, and radishes are widely cultivated. A local specialty is wild boar hotpot, a miso-flavored hotpot dish made with wild boar caught by local fishermen and locally grown vegetables and konjac. Other dishes include sweetened river fish, local sake, and gohei mochi. Lure and fly fishing are available at Lake Danto, and an annual fishing tournament is held. Mandarin ducks can be spotted upstream of the Toyokawa River. Shiratori Shrine also hosts a flower festival every January, which has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
